When Beachgoers Ran From Attack, Viral Picture Depicts Lifeguard Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned coast as her back yard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, similar to other local residents, detected loud noises echoing around the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks on display signaled trouble had occurred.

While standing on the street, talking to a duo who had hurried up the incline soaked, she noticed someone moving up behind her. It was a lifeguard, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that all the others was trying to escape from, carrying that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running towards something that certainly every fibre in your being would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage During Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of valour in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and paramedics attending to numerous victims.
