The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An recent term came to light a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a child who has seen the death of their whole family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials has denied these accusations, just as it disavows all charges it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is treated differently.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
