Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
