Joshua Doubles Down on Controversial ‘Kill’ Statements Aimed at Jake Paul

Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul face off
Jake Paul will meet a major challenge against former heavyweight champion AJ.

Anthony Joshua stood by his much-discussed comments about wanting to “kill” his opponent during a news conference in Miami on Wednesday.

The remarks were originally stated on the previous day when the boxer was questioned if he would hold back against the social media star, replying that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.

Saturday's contest against the YouTuber-turned-boxer has drawn concern over safety concerns and the size difference between the two fighters.

Tyson Fury Labels AJ a “Classless Loser”

Ex- world heavyweight champion The Gypsy King called Anthony Joshua a “disgrace” for his inflammatory comments.

But Joshua, explained his stance: “This is what I do, we fight. We have a license that permits extreme violence.

“I understand many people don't grasp it but this is what my job is. I just enjoy what I do. The outcome, happens - as long as my hand is raised, that's what's important, with all due respect.”

He continued, “That's just the psychology we have to have as boxers. I'm unsure if other boxers think that way. Maybe they're a bit more tame. The way my mind works. When you're in the ring, it's a perilous thing. Anything can happen.”

“You hope your opponent exits the ring in good health, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed knowing you just did your job. It wasn't personal.”

Paul's Fiery Response

Jake Paul, a huge underdog in the fight as a natural cruiserweight, was equally fiery in his reply.

“This is a contemporary combat sport,” Paul said. “I'm prepared. I want his most powerful punches. I want there to be zero excuses when it's all said and done. We should kill each other.”

Joshua will face his opponent, in his twenties, at Miami's arena in a bout many consider a glaring mismatched contest, with some arguing it should have been sanctioned as an exhibition bout.

The professional contest will be fought over 8 3-minute stanzas using standard ten-ounce padded gloves, with a stipulated maximum weight for the former champion.

Joshua Claims He Was “Called In to Save” Boxing

Despite the graphic terminology used, the fighter claimed he has been “brought in to save” boxing.

“They want me to stop the Jake Paul phenomenon and I comprehend it and that's why I have to bear boxing on my back in this fight,” he concluded.

The event also had more humorous exchanges, with AJ smiling as his rival sang ‘London Bridge Is Falling Down’ to him.

The final staredown concluded peacefully, with Paul striking a unusual posture before the champion stayed composed and lightly touched Paul's chain.

Paul & Joshua Dismiss Scripted Claims

The peculiar aspect of this fight has led to rumors about its authenticity, including suggestions that he may be restricted from knocking Paul out.

“There's nothing in the contract, Joshua can confirm it. We're going to war,” Jake Paul said.

The former champion, wearing a expensive chain, humorously added, “The only thing in the agreement that got my attention was the payment.”

He has claimed on his platforms that the total purse will be extremely high.

Largest Upset in Boxing History?

Paul first gained fame as an online prankster, amassing a massive online audience.

He has not faced anyone of Joshua's pedigree but insisted that his opponent would take him seriously.

“It's a wise move on his part,” Paul commented. “This could possibly be, and will be, the biggest loss of his career.”

A win for Paul would be arguably the most shocking upset in the boxing's history.

It would undoubtedly leave an indelible stain on his record, but the athlete said it would not spell the end.

“I'd come back again, move on,” he said. “I'll be headlining again in a year or two. That's life. I'm a player in the sport.”
