New research reveals that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
