A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us locate the footage.

We are analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the site from which the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
