Approximately fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior official commented the vandalism made him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
