A senior Russian general has been killed following an blast in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The event happened on Monday morning when an bomb concealed beneath a vehicle was set off, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.
The committee mentioned that one theory under investigation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has offered no public response.
Site of the Attack
Officials have been sent to the location, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the city.
Media coverage suggest the blast occurred in a parking area near a residential building.
Pattern of Assaults
Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.
This new event comes after other serious incidents, including:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.
While a source from Ukraine in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are never officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.
The conflict has been marked by covert operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.
The probe into General Sarvarov's death is still ongoing.
